Masterclass Tutors

Jens Peter Maintz started his teaching career as an assistant to David Geringas in his legendary Celloklasse at the Academy of Music Lübeck. After several years at the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, he was appointed professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin in 2004, succeeding Wolfgang Boettcher.
His class is internationally successful, with students winning prizes at prestigious competitions such as the Tchaikovsky Competition (1st Prize 2015 Andrei Ionita), ARD Competition, Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann, and others. Many of his former students hold important positions in leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic (1st Principal Cello Bruno Delepelaire since 2013), the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Dresden.
Since 2017, he has also been a professor at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. He regularly gives masterclasses at major festivals and academies, including Kronberg Academy, Mozarteum Salzburg, and the Piatigorsky Festival in Los Angeles.
Jens Peter Maintz plays the 'Ex-Servais' cello made by Giovanni Grancino in 1697.

About the programme
No great artist steps straight from the classroom onto the world’s biggest stages, no one goes from conservatoire to Carnegie Hall overnight. Witnessing the transformation of extraordinary talent into top-level artistry is a fascinating journey, one that the Dvořák Prague Festival’s masterclasses bring to life.
It's fascinating to see how a well-rehearsed piece flourishes with each tiny refinement—perfection lies in the details, where mastery is found as much as the devil.
